TAKE TIME TO CHOOSE
First consider what you want to do with your horse and how much time and money you can spend. Some horses have special needs, so before you fall in love with the prettiest one in the pasture, consider not just your needs, but theirs.

WHAT YOU GET FOR FREE ...
It goes without saying that there are tons of horses available right now. And although a free horse sounds great, it might not be the best choice for you or the horse.
Many horses are given away simply because the owner tried to sell the horse but nobody wanted to buy.
Many horses are given away because they are ill-tempered or bad-mannered, and you may not be told what sets them off.
Horses are often much older than they appear. Older horses have special needs and may not be rideable.
Some chronic illnesses are difficult to detect.
The “price” of the horse is almost irrelevant. What’s more important is the ongoing care of your horse.
